Electronic Travel Authorisation
The UK Government has recently announced that from 27th November 2024, some non-visa National visitors to the UK will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to their arrival. Any applications are for entry to the UK from 8th January 2025. From 5th March 2025, the ETA system will expand further to include European countries.
ETA’s are not visas and if you hold a Limited Leave to Enter or Remain visa, you will continue to use this visa to re-enter the UK when you travel.
If you have family members or friends visiting you from one of the listed countries, they will need to apply for an ETA before they travel. Each ETA lasts for 2 years but, importantly, visitors must not stay in the UK for more than 6 months in any 12 month period. Visitors must adhere to the visit guidance which includes that you must not make ‘frequent and successive’ visits to the UK.
The current cost for an ETA is £10 and you’ll usually get a decision within 3 working days. It is important to note that an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK, and you may still need to see a Border Force officer when you arrive.
You can check which countries are included from November 2024 and March 2025 by checking the Government’s ETA page here.
You can apply for an ETA using this website. There is also an app available for mobile devices. Please note, there are only 6 countries that can currently apply for an ETA until it’s first expansion in November 2024.
